Boiler Upgrade Scheme: who can apply
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is a government grant scheme for England and Wales, administered by Ofgem. You must own the property, which can be your own home or a property you let, and it must be in England or Wales.
You do not apply yourself. The grant application must be made by an MCS certified installer on your behalf, and you confirm the application when Ofgem contacts you.
Boiler Upgrade Scheme: which properties qualify
The property must have a valid Energy Performance Certificate (EPC), and that EPC must not carry outstanding recommendations for loft or cavity wall insulation. Where insulation is recommended, it needs to be installed and the EPC reissued before a grant can be claimed.
New build properties are generally excluded, as are social housing properties and properties that have already received government funding towards a heat pump. Self builds can qualify in defined circumstances.
Boiler Upgrade Scheme: which systems qualify
The system being replaced must be a fossil fuel system such as mains gas, oil, LPG, coal or electric heating. The new system must be a qualifying air source heat pump, ground or water source heat pump, or in limited rural cases a biomass boiler, and it must meet the scheme's efficiency requirements.
The installation must be designed and commissioned to MCS standards by an MCS certified installer, and the heat pump must meet the whole heating and hot water demand of the property. Capacity limits apply, so very large systems fall outside the scheme.
Boiler Upgrade Scheme: how much the grant is worth
£7,500 is available towards an air source heat pump replacing a mains gas boiler, rising to £9,000 for certain off gas grid properties currently heated by oil or LPG. Grant levels, technologies and end dates are set by government and can change, so the amount confirmed at the point of application is the one that applies to your project.
Only one grant can be claimed per property, and the grant cannot be combined with other government funding for the same measure.
Boiler Upgrade Scheme: how the grant is paid
The grant is paid to the installer, not to you, and is deducted from the price you are quoted. Atlas Energy prepares and submits the application, so you see the reduced figure on your quotation rather than paying in full and claiming back.
If a grant application is unsuccessful or is withdrawn, the full price of the installation becomes payable, which is why we confirm eligibility before any work is booked.
No C, No Fee EPC assessments
Our No C, No Fee service applies to qualifying residential EPC assessments where we first confirm that the property can be accepted into the service. We assess the property's current energy performance and provide a written improvement strategy designed to achieve an EPC rating of C.
Once the agreed improvement works have been completed as specified, we carry out a new EPC assessment to establish the final rating. If the property still does not achieve an EPC rating of C, we will waive or refund the assessment fee. The guarantee applies only when the agreed works are completed through Atlas Energy and does not cover changes made by third parties after our recommendations are issued.
